Chatterbox is Singapore’s best-known “fine dining” chicken rice — a $25++ signature Mandarin Chicken Rice at Hilton Singapore Orchard that costs roughly 5-7 times what the same dish costs at a hawker stall. It’s been running since 1971, moved to its current Level 5 home when the hotel rebranded from Mandarin Orchard in 2022, and remains one of the most-searched restaurant names in Singapore precisely because people want to know: is it actually worth it?

Before you search further: “Express by Chatterbox,” the $8 casual spinoff that used to operate at Downtown Gallery, Shenton Way, is permanently closed. Several older articles and blog posts still reference it as a cheaper alternative — that information is outdated. As of now, the Hilton Singapore Orchard restaurant is the only place to get Chatterbox’s chicken rice.
Is $25 Chicken Rice Actually Worth It? A Real Comparison
This is the question everyone searching “Chatterbox” actually wants answered, and most reviews avoid it. Here’s where Chatterbox sits against Singapore’s other well-known chicken rice options:
| Tier | Example | Price (per set) |
|---|---|---|
| Hawker | Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice | $3.50-$5 |
| Casual restaurant | Wee Nam Kee | From $5.90 |
| Premium restaurant | Boon Tong Kee | $8-$15 |
| Chatterbox | Hilton Singapore Orchard | $25 (individual) |
At roughly 5x Tian Tian and nearly 2x Boon Tong Kee, Chatterbox isn’t competing on being the best-value chicken rice in Singapore — it never has been. What you’re actually paying for is the hotel dining experience: a 120+ seat restaurant with banquette seating and a verandah area on Orchard Road, table service, a broader menu beyond chicken rice, and chickens sourced at roughly 2kg each (larger than typical hawker birds) for a specific texture. Reviewers consistently describe the rice itself — cooked in aged Jasmine rice, chicken fat, shallots and pandan — as genuinely well-executed, not just a name-brand markup. Whether that’s worth the multiple over hawker pricing depends on what you’re optimising for: if it’s purely the cheapest good chicken rice, Chatterbox was never the answer; if it’s a sit-down meal with the dish done well, it delivers on that.

What to Order Beyond the Chicken Rice
The chicken rice is the reason most people book a table, and it holds up — but reviewers consistently flag that Chatterbox is “more than just their chicken rice.” The Sea Perch with Burnt Green Chilli ($35) and Mackerel & Crab Otah Otah ($15) are the two dishes that come up most often as standouts worth ordering alongside or instead of a second chicken rice portion if you’re dining as a group. The Lobster Laksa ($34) is a similar premium spin on a hawker classic, for the same reason people order the chicken rice here — a familiar dish executed at a higher register.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Chatterbox chicken rice cost?
The signature Mandarin Chicken Rice is $25++ for an individual set, $38++ for half a chicken, or $72++ for a whole chicken — roughly 5-7 times what the same dish costs at a hawker stall like Tian Tian.
Is Chatterbox chicken rice worth the price?
It depends on what you’re comparing it to. As the cheapest good chicken rice in Singapore, no — hawker and casual restaurant options cost a fraction of the price. As a sit-down hotel dining experience with a well-executed version of the dish, table service, and a broader menu, reviewers generally find it delivers on that different value proposition.

Where is Chatterbox located now?

What else should I order at Chatterbox besides chicken rice?
The Sea Perch with Burnt Green Chilli ($35), Mackerel & Crab Otah Otah ($15), and Lobster Laksa ($34) are the most-recommended dishes beyond the signature chicken rice.
