How to Buy UOB Shares in Singapore
UOB shares trade on SGX, so buying them works the same way as any other SGX-listed stock. Here’s the general process:
1. Open a CDP Account
The Central Depository (CDP) account is where your shares are officially registered in your name. You need to be at least 18, hold a Singapore bank account, and not be an undischarged bankrupt. You can apply online via the SGX website — using MyInfo through Singpass makes this a fast process; a manual application takes longer.
2. Open a Brokerage Account
Your broker is where you actually place buy/sell orders. Common CDP-linked brokers in Singapore include DBS Vickers, OCBC Securities, Phillip Securities (POEMS), Maybank Securities and CGS International, among others. With a CDP-linked account, shares are registered directly in your name; with a custodian account (offered by some newer brokerages), the broker holds shares in a nominee structure on your behalf — the trade-off is usually lower fees versus direct registration and voting rights.
3. Fund and Trade
Transfer cash into your brokerage account via internet banking or FAST, then search for “UOB” or the ticker “U11” on your broker’s platform. You can place a market order (executes immediately at the best available price) or a limit order (executes only at a price you specify or better).
